If you sit at your desk all day these 4 changes will improve your wellness

A sedentary life can be harmful in the long run and it’s growing concerns for health experts. If you are one of the many professionals that work from home and are wondering how to improve the quality of your wellness, then following these four tips will certainly help guide you down the path. Even if your body is not used to physical labor throughout the day, it is possible to stay healthy in your environment.

1 – Switch to a good diet

Although this is may sound easier said than done, making sure to eat regular meals and nourish yourself are the first steps to improve your wellness. Avoid junk food while you are working. Switch to balanced meals that include protein and good carbohydrates (like whole-grain bread): this way you will stay energized throughout the day. Enjoy your food! Eat your lunch away from the screen and out of sight.

2 – Walk around the office (or your living room)

Try to get up for a little walk around the room every hour. This is a good way to give your body a little stretch. Your eyes and mind will be grateful as well. Getting up is also a good excuse to get water and you will improve your daily intake.

3 – Practice deep breathing

Due to stress, anxiety or bad habits like smoking, many people don’t breathe properly. However, breathing is a natural process that keeps us alive and functioning, and it’s important to breathe properly. It just takes a little focus:

  1. Inhale through your nose for a count of five seconds.
  2. Hold for a count of two seconds.
  3. Exhale through your mouth for eight seconds.

4 – Adjust your workspace

Don’t underestimate the importance of a correct posture. Knowing that you will spend most of the day sitting down in front of your screen, make sure to adjust your chair height and chair back. Your chair should support the natural curve of your lower back, and your feet should be flat on the floor with knees at 90 degrees when sitting upright. Adjust your computer monitor and rotate it vertically once every hour so you will avoid eye strain.

Finding the time to do some stretches and practice meditation will also help your overall wellness.

We know finding a few hours in a busy schedule to exercise every day may seem like a bother. However, if you’re committed to your health, you won’t regret making a few changes.
